SPF: Neurocience and Responsiblity
Start Date: 9/19/2018Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Date: 9/19/2018End Time: 8:00 PM
Event Description:
Advancements in neuroscience threaten to leave little room for free will. As we learn about the brain, we find ways our material bodies determine what we think. Western ethics, however, takes that "ought implies can" as axiomatic. That is, if a person cannot do something, she isn't obligated to do it. Does what we are learning about neuroscience undermine our concept of responsibility? Is it fair to hold someone responsible if they could not do otherwise? What changes if we eliminate the idea of responsibility?
Everyone is always invited.
