Sabbatical Talk: Challenging Compulsory Monogamy and Gender Hierarchy; How Swingers and Polyamorists Negotiate Intimacy
Start Date: 2/19/2018Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 2/19/2018End Time: 1:00 PM
Event Description:
Dr. Michelle Wolkomir, Professor of Sociology, will present findings from research conducted during her sabbatical. Using data from 48 interviews with swingers and polyamorists, her study examines how negotiating multiple partner intimacies in varied ways influences the ideological frameworks people use to conceptualize gendered power dynamics and relationship form. The necessary development of new frameworks and ideas about love and intimacy substantially diminish gender hierarchy and enable an egalitarian ethic to emerge.
